7 amazing Soap Operas every Kenyan has Watched | Have you?

I pity the current generation. They will never get to watch heart touching soap operas like we did. If you were born during the late 80's, 90's and a year or two after 2000, then you must have watched the soap operas that used to air between 2005-2010.
Six and eight in the evening was the time every family was glued to their television. I remember how I used to run from school to home every evening so as to never miss an episode. In school the only topic of discussion was how the previous night's soap opera episode was.

Soap operas nowadays is considered a ladies thing but in our time, you would find men in matatus discussing what happened in the previous episode that got aired. Bottles of beer in bars were put aside as the men were deeply concentrating on the soap operas.

We had our crushes on the actors in the likes of Paloma and Maricruz. The girls too had theirs mostly on Alejandro and all would be arguing of how they will marry him when they grew up. I wonder if those girls are still dreaming of marrying their star crushes.

Our mums used to prepare the meals very early and fast, especially when the thought of missing an episode crossed their minds. Even our fathers made it a must to be home early lest he would be left behind in the talk of the nation.

It was as if we were taking part of the soap opera as you would see us, especially the ladies, getting emotional to an extent of crying when the antagonists played unfair to the stars. We knew but never took into consideration the fact that they were just acting, not like real life events.

I think this is where most of the current leading media houses got their fame. Citizen TV and KTN were specialised in selecting good soap opera that they even got the actresses all the way from South America to make intros for the shows.

In the Name of Love

Paloma (Allisson Lozz) is a child who loses her parents in a tragic accident and must go live in the house of her two single aunts, Macarena (Victoria Ruffo) and Carlota (Leticia Calderón). Macarena is loving and caring, and soon forms a warm bond with her niece; whereas Carlota is repressive and domineering, and seems to enjoy making Paloma’s life miserable. The two aunts guard a family secret that will have a major influence in the life of Paloma. When the secret finally comes to light, everything will change for her.

Storm over Paradise

In 1519 a Mayan priest, Ahzac, discovers that his daughter Ixmy has fallen in love with a white foreigner. He plans to sacrifice her as a gift to the gods, along with items made of gold and a black pearl. Ixmy avoids her fate, and Ahzac curses the black pearl: "Whoever has this pearl in their possession will never be able to know what happiness is!"

In 1987, Eliseo Bravo (Alejandro Tommasi) and Hernán Lazcano (René Strickler) explore the coral reefs of Cozumel and discover the black pearl. When Hernán touches the pearl, Ahzac's curse takes effect. Eliseo's greed leads to Hernán's death, leaving his wife Analy (Eugenia Cauduro) to raise their newborn daughter Aymar alone.

Nineteen years later, Aymar Lazcano (Sara Maldonado) is a beautiful young woman. After her mother is murdered by a jealous suitor when Aymar rejects him, she lives with family friend Pablo Solis (Manuel Ojeda). She meets Nicolás Bravo (Erick Elías), Eliseo's son, and they fall in love.

Avaricious Maura Duran (Mariana Seoane) meets the main characters in the guise of Karina Rosemberg, a rich heiress whose land Eliseo covets. Manipulated by Maura, Eliseo detests Aymar and her relationship with his son and Maura falls in love with Eliseo's oldest son David (José Luis Reséndez).

The real Karina Rosemberg (Ingrid Martz) is in a mental hospital under the care of Aymar, who found her wandering the streets destitute. Karina had met David and fallen in love with him, despite his drunkenness at the time, but he does not reciprocate her feelings because he is infatuated with Maura. Maura's attempts to separate Aymar and Nicolás include a fake pregnancy (with Nicolás the alleged father), an attempted murder and the killing of Nicolás' youngest brother, Leonardo.

At the end of the series, Maura is stung by a swarm of bees and dies of anaphylactic shock. David and Karina and Aymar and Nicolás marry, and both couples are happy Nocolás and Aymar with their son Hernán Nicolas jr and their nephew Leonardo and Karina and David with their son Elisèo David.

Wild at Heart

Maricruz Olivares lives with Ramiro, her maternal grandfather, and Solita, who is Deaf and who was found abandoned, by her mom Guadalupe Mendoza/Guadalupe Olivares and her grandpapa when she was a little baby. She lives in a shack located in the middle of nature, near the Narvaéz's ranch property line. Miguel and Octavio are siblings and they both own the Narvaéz's Ranch, which is mortgaged because of the bad administration Miguel, the older brother, has made. Octavio is a pilot and arrives in the ranch in need of money since he has lost his job and wants the lands to be sold. He doesn't imagine that soon he will forget this purpose and will discover that the earth, the sowing and sharing with the workmen become a source of passion for him.

Octavio meets Maricruz while he is traveling around the lands and catches his foreman trying to take her on. Regardless of her humble origins, he defends her as a gentleman. Immediately, he is trapped by her sympathy and beauty. When Octavio discovers the malice with which Lucia, his sister-in-law, treats Maricruz, he gets really angry and decides to marry Maricruz in order to teach his brother and Lucia a lesson. But Maricruz continues to get dissed and judged for her way of being, talking, acting and eating.

However, when he receives a tempting job offer as a pilot, Octavio leaves the ranch and asks his brother to give Maricruz his part of the land. Lucia and her cousin Esther set a trap for Maricruz to accuse her unjustly of being a thief and ends up in jail. A lawyer believes in her and achieves her freedom; but when she returns, she is shocked to discover that her grandfather died during a fire by Lucía's order done by Eusebio.

Maricruz leaves to the capital city with her sister Solita and starts working as a maid at Alejandro's house, who happens to be her father, without any of them knowing about the bond between them. Maricruz gains his trust and love, and he helps her to get educated and become a high society woman. In the meantime she accepts to help him with the administration of the casino-cruise ship, posted in Isla Dorada. There she will have to face the ambition of the Canseco sisters Carola and Raiza, who keep their lives comfortable at Alejandro's cost. Alejandro's butler Tobías discovers Maricruz's birth certificate where her real name appears: Maria-Alejandra Mendoza Olivares. In order to avoid the big impression that could kill Alejandro, since he suffers from a heart disease, he decides not to reveal him that Maricruz is his daughter, but he does tell Maricruz the truth and she feels very happy with such news.

Miguel informs his brother that Maricruz disappeared after her grandfather's death. Octavio arrives in the casino, invited by a friend. Octavio's good looks catch the interest of sophisticated women and he feels flattered, but he cannot forget Maricruz. He doesn't imagine that the humble youngster who used to be his wife is no other than the elegant Maria-Alejandra Mendoza, the heir, manager and main host of the casino-cruise ship.

Abyss of Passion

Rosendo Arango, the owner of Grupo La Anita, is married to Alfonsina. They have one son, Damian. Estefanía Bouvier is married to Augusto Castanon and they have one daughter, Elisa. Rosendo cheats on his wife with Carmina Bouvier, Estefanía's sister. Damian and Elisa become friends because Augusto and Rosendo were best friends. But one day, Rosendo and Carmina try to go away from La Ermita, the pueblo in which they live in. But, Estefanía, who had found out about their plans, wants to prevent this, shuts Carmina in her room and then goes with Rosendo in his car, trying to convince him not to run away with Carmina. They have an accident and die and everyone thinks they were lovers.

Power of Destiny

Mexican soap opera The Power of Destiny (La Fuerza del Destino) portrays the value of loyalty, honesty, and truth amongst family and friends.  The story begins when Ivan (David Zepeda), 14, returns with his mother, Alicia (Leticia Calderón), to the land of his birth: Alamos, Sonora.

Although Ivan’s father, Juan Jaime Mondragón (Juan Ferrara) is a wealthy and powerful businessman, the landowner rejects him.

Ivan’s mother is forced to accept a job as a servant for the Lomelí Curiel family, where Dona Carlota (Delia Casanova), her daughter Lucrecia (Rosa María Bianchi), her son-in-law Gerardo (Alejandro Tommasi), and their two daughters, Maripaz Lomelí Curiel (Laisha Wilkins) and Lucia Lomelí Curiel (Sandra Echeverria) live.

Ivan helps the Curiel family in any way he can, and continues to study with the generous help of Carlota, until he is 19. But all this changes when Maripaz who turned 18, returns home from pursuing her studies abroad. They both fall in love and she ends up pregnant.

Maripaz’s family decides to keep the pregnancy a secret so as not to tarnish their family image and she refuses to marry Ivan because he is a son to a maid. Ivan leaves Curiel’s family home and goes to his Godmother and there finds his mother dying after a bad abortion. He believes Juan Jaime is the father of the baby who he vows to kill to pay for his mother’s death.   Lucrecia pays some thugs to beat Ivan but he is saved by his friends Camilo and Antolin.

Ivan is mistakenly accused of the murder and is forced to leave the country to save his best friend Camilo from going to prison since he was told that he killed the man trying to save Ivan. While recovering from the beating, he has to leave Mexico and go to the United States as an illegal immigrant.

Triumph of Love

Victoria Gutierrez is introduced as a young servant working in the Iturbide's household. Juan Pablo Iturbide Montejo, the future priest, son of Octavio and Bernarda is attracted to Victoria. The attraction is mutual.

In a night, Victoria becomes pregnant with Juan Pablo's child. Bernarda is furious upon discovering Victoria's pregnancy and kicks her out of the house. Victoria finds support from her friend, Antonieta Orozco and together they find work in a sewing company, owned by Rodolfo Padilla. Victoria gives birth to a little girl and names her Maria.

Corazon Salvaje

A story that begins with María del Rosario y Juan de Dios, two beings who love each other, separated by societal differences. She, a young woman of Veracruz high society; he, a humble fisherman. Rodrigo, a powerful man in the port, is furious when he finds out Maria plans to marry Juan. He sends the fisherman to prizon and with the help of Leonarda, Maria's sister, he locks the young woman in a hacienda, where she gives birth to the son who is fruit of her forbidden love.

Juan escapes from jail and, pursued by Rodrigo, he falls off a cliff into the ocean. Leonarda causes the baby to disappear and locks Maria in the dungeon in the basement of the country estate, telling Rodrigo that she has died.

Rodrigo, desperate, disregarding Leonarda's confession of love, leaves for Europe, from which he will return married to Constanza. Leonarda marries Noel, the family notary, and gives birth to Renato.

Juan survives and discovers his son was rescued from the mountains by Remigio and adopted by Remigio's mother, Aurora, who has given him the name found in the note hidden in his clothes: Juan de Dios (Juan of God). Years later, the dying fisherman searches for his son, tells him his story and asks that he punish Rodrigo. At his father's grave, the young man swears vengeance and changes his name to Juan del Diablo (Juan of the Devil). Nevertheless, when he meets Rodrigo's twin daughters, Aimée y Regina, an uncontrollable passion for Aimee invades him.

Regina loves Renato, but when he falls in love with Aimee, Regina decides to become a nun. Aimee marries Renato but continues to see Juan. When she's on point of fleeing with him and Renato discovers them, Regina tries to protect Aimee, saing it is she (Regina) who was going to escape with Juan.

Renato forces them to marry and Juan agrees, with the intent of getting revenge on her for all the damage Rodrigo did to his (Juan's) parents. Nevertheless, as they get to know each other, they discover they were born for each other, and that their love will be stronger than hate and vengeance, a love as deep and indomitable as the sea.
